Dharana

  • Concentration

Also known as thrataka, it is very difficult to Concentrate on an abstract like god whom is all pervading with no form. It is mentioned in the shastras that even meditation on an abstract is also difficult. So to start with, it is better with a figure and in course of time the figure visualised automatically goes out of ones view (saguna and nirguna dhyana). This can be very well compared here by starting concentration with open eyes on a fixed object. Hence we have advocated the technique of using the hands for concentration with the help of the eyes.

  • Broomadya Drishti

This is frontal gaze. That is to take the vision with eyes open in between the eyebrows. To be precise the root of the nose. This is a very effective technique to concentrate because the thought get cut off as the person has to view the particular spot constantly. This is also claimed to give relief from frontal headaches. A technique very often practiced by our seers and also mentioned in Geetha by Lord Krishna.

  • Nasikaagra

This is a variation of the above except to shift the view to the tip of the nose.

  • Finger-Eye-Movement

We start with the right hand keeping the left in static gnanamudra, the right hand thumb alone pointing, brought in front of the eyes to the same level and the thumb is taken out to the same side till the vision loses track of the thumb as it is taken out.
The same is repeated with the left also. Following this, both the thumbs are taken together and separated from the center and taken outwards to the corresponding side viewing the thumb alternately one side to the other. The idea is to concentrate the vision on the moving object, the thumb either individually or simultaneously without changing the position of the head; the eye muscles alone are used for visualizing and following.
One can test his own field of vision roughly by this. Apart from this the muscles of the eyeball get exercised and toned up. After performing this one should warm the palms and rest the eyes.
